Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that the City of Bayonne will sponsor a Walk for Puerto Rican Relief on Friday, October 13, beginning at 7:00 p.m., rain or shine. Mayor Davis said, “The people of Puerto Rico have been devastated by a destructive hurricane. They have lost their homes, jobs, food, electric power, drinking water, and public services. We need to do our part to help our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico. By holding this walk, the City of Bayonne can help Puerto Rico to maintain life and begin recovery.”

The walk will begin with a Puerto Rican flag-raising ceremony at City Hall and the singing of the Puerto Rican anthem. Mayor Davis and fellow marchers will then proceed southward down Avenue C two blocks to 26th Street. The walk will turn eastward down 26th Street to Broadway. At Broadway, marchers will turn right, and will proceed southward, all the way down Broadway to Mayor Dennis P. Collins Park on 1st Street.

Everyone participating in the walk is asked to make a donation. Everyone not participating in the walk is encouraged to offer a contribution to the relief fund. The Bayonne Economic Opportunity Foundation (BEOF), Bayonne’s community action agency, will be the local collector of funds. The BEOF will disburse the donations from Bayonne to New Jersey for Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief (NJ4PR). NJ4PR has been funding relief operations in Puerto Rico. All contributions will be accepted. No donation will be considered too large or too small.

Here is how you can help:

1.) Join the walk and bring a check made payable to the BEOF, with “Puerto Rico” in the memo portion of your check.

2.) When you see the walk in your neighborhood on October 13, please give Mayor Davis a check payable to the BEOF, with “Puerto Rico” in the memo portion of the check. Cash donations will be accepted, but checks are preferred for security reasons and tax deduction purposes.

3.) Go the to the BEOF’s website, beof.org.betasites.soundst.com. Follow the instructions to find the online link for the Puerto Rico relief donations.

Those interested in sponsoring individuals in the walk are encouraged to give them sponsorship checks, which must be payable to the BEOF, with “Puerto Rico” in the memo portion of the check. Sponsorship checks made payable to the BEOF are preferred for security reasons and tax deduction purposes. There is no specific dollar amount required for sponsorship checks.
